Amanda GizziOn the verge of Latvian centenary celebrations, at 4 p.m. on Friday 16 November at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, launch of eight new artistic projects will mark the opening of the centre’s new exhibition season.

In the monthly parade of Latvian autumn, November tends to be associated with darkness, cold and hunger for the sun. In reality, this month is as bleak and grey as we make it our hearts and minds. This year, the red-and-white splendour of national flags that brightens the annual Independence Day celebrations seems especially vibrant. This year, we step over the threshold of the first centenary of Latvian statehood, glancing back to assess our past accomplishments and looking forward as we plan for the future. It is a time for stocktaking in all fields and a time to dream about countless future achievements.

The fifth 2018 exhibition season at the Rothko Centre with its exhibition projects is a gift to each and every one of us on the momentous occasion of Latvian centenary.

Latvian art is represented by a group exhibition from Talsi “Colours of Kurzeme” and individual projects by two outstanding Latvian ceramicists – Izabella Krolle’s “Artery” and Lilija Zeiļa’s “Traces. Touch. Versatility”.

Estonian graphic artists congratulate us with a group project “Estonian Centenary in Latvia”, which features as many as 50 artists. Meanwhile, greetings from Lithuania come through Siauliai with an exhibition by Vaidotis Janulis “Diary of Dvinsk Fortress”.

Bright additions to the new season are the travelling exhibition “Artapestry 5” from the European Tapestry Forum, the exhibition of the domestically based 5th International Textile and Fibre Art Symposium as well as the exhibition of selected artwork by Julius Voegtli “Forerunner of Swiss Impressionism” from Pashmin Art Gallery, Germany.

During the season’s opening event at 4 p.m. through 5 p.m., the new exhibitions will be available free of charge.

The new season’s exhibitions will be on public display until 15 January 2019.
