The Pamėnkalnio Gallery is happy to present a new solo show titled “Postproduction” by the young Lithuanian painter Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas. The show will start on 12th March at the Pamėnkalnio Gallery (1 Pamėnkalnio St, Vilnius), without an opening reception.
According to the author himself, poverty of imagination and the abandonment of personal and intimate stories in his work prompted the term postproduction, which he borrowed from the book “Postproduction” by Nicolas Bourriaud.
“In the book, this concept is interpreted as a phenomenon of remixing and resuscitating cultural symbols, thanks to which a new program and continuation is created for an artwork and an object. Therefore, it is not surprising that at the threshold of euthanasia of a kind of painting identity, or due to the lack of the aforementioned imagination, I started post-producing, mixing images of sculptures, paintings, pop culture icons found and appropriated on the Internet. Due to the lack of a close relationship with the motives, and the imaginary, or more precisely, the barely tangible perception of the chosen cultural motive, I was confronted with the concept of depersonalization, which I translated into the creative action itself. It is no coincidence that I choose aerosol paints, which, when sprayed as a paint mist, construct a spectacle as if through a fog. With the help of this fog and a specific silhouette, I decided to draw what is invisible, what is no longer there, behind the representative image and the fading historiographical mist. The images I create are taken out of context, like a pattern of memes, a certain cultural mirage. I do all this with a depersonalized stroke, aerosol sfumato or graffiti – that makes the present temporarily meaningful.” (Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas)
Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas (b. 1991, Kaunas) is a Lithuanian painter, curator and columnist. In 2018 the artist obtained a master’s degree at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. He is a member of LATGA since 2018. Since 2012 the author has been actively curating and participating in group exhibitions, art projects, plein-airs, and competitions. In the recent years he held solo exhibitions at Parko Gallery, Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Comforter and Pamėnkalnio Gallery. In 2018 he founded an art platform for young Lithuanian painters “Kontr-Argumentas” (Counter-Argument). Since 2019 the author’s articles have been published in the “Literatūra ir Menas” magazine, under the heading “Point of View”. The author’s work is included in the album “# 30. New Lithuanian Painting” (Artseria, 2019). The artist is the recipient of Individual Grant for Artists, 2020.
