David Roberts Foundation in London is continuing its collaboration with Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė. The first collaboration with DRAF occurred in 2013, when Lina Lapelytė was invited to participate in the event series that followed the exhibition House of Leaves, curated by Vincent Honore.
House of Leaves was planned as a continuous dissolve, the exhibition self-organizing internally, proceeding mostly from the artworks and the building themselves.According to DRAF’s press release the exhibition was trying to look at the museum as a stage and ‘assumed a musical state of mind, inspired by the rhythms, choreographies, sequences and repetitions of the artworks, which are like musical instruments (after John Cage) for an institution whose main duty is to dance (after Paul Holdengräber).
‘Not a museum as temple, supermarket, mass media outlet, fun park, or forum: but a museum as a score – free, uncertain, non-productive, and fictive – outside ordinary rules.’ For this movement Lina Lapelytė has presented her work Mother Earth (2012), a song and a performance inspired by anarchist Emma Goldman.
In 2014, DRAF is continuing the explorations of the museum as a stage and again invited Lina Lapelytė to curate a three-day how titled Everything I Do, I Do It Big where she will be presenting her recent works.
The exhibition will be a changing construct of Lapelytė’s new and existing works – performative installations, videos and events. It is conceived as an exploration of the DRAF space and interaction with it. The project inhabits the gallery site as a stage or as a place for action, tension, repetition and chance.
Performers and contributing artists include Nouria Bah, Lieve Carchon, Anat Ben David, Angharad Davies, Sharon Gal, Phil Goss, Rebecca La Horrox, Heidi Heidelberg, Federico Strate Pezdirc, Sebastian Schmidt, Florence Shaw, Maria Sideri, Miguel Valdivia among others.
The show will be open to public from the 9th of January with an opening reception and a performance of FM at 7pm.
FM is a new work constructed using early music originally composed for castrati singers.
Recently Lina Lapelytė presented her opera Have a Good Day! produced in collaboration with Vaiva Grainytė and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė at the Shanghai International contemporary Theater festival ACT. Next January it will be shown at the New York Prototype festival. Also Lapelytė has been shortlisted for the Artsfoudation Award in London and will present her recent performance work Candy Shop at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the 14th of January 2014.
David Roberts Art Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation founded in 2007. It is directed and curated by Vincent Honoré. The new premises were inaugurated with A House of Leaves, curated by Vincent Honoré. With a larger and more flexible exhibition space measuring approximately 475sq m, DRAF has become a meeting point and an evolving resource for both the art and local communities. Creating a platform for collaborations, DRAF continues its commitment to produce, share and disseminate knowledge.
