Continuing the project “Art Space for Young Artists” gallery “Meno Niša” is launching exhibition “03” by artist Gabrielė Gervickaitė.

The opening of the exhibition is at 6 PM on the 28th of March, exhibition “03” will be open until the 14th of April.

Show-analysis “03” is my creative reflection on the Soviet times I was born into, an attempt to understand the influence of Soviet imaginary upon the present times. Putting together illustrations from the past and images from today, I want to understand the perception of ethics and what norms were previously and are currently applied. To reflect on the previous period of time I used medical illustrations, which I mostly found in student textbooks, for example, manuals on surgery, gynaecology and physiotherapy. It is important to me what ethics and aesthetics was deployed to depict a human being in these books. By “cutting” and “pasting” the bodies into new surroundings, I transfer the viewer to another world, into unconventional and even uncomfortable situations. In these works of art I explore power mechanisms created by the medical industry during the Soviet period.
