Kauno bienalė_2013

The 9th Kaunas Biennial UNITEXT invites you to discover, learn and create in various biennial exhibition spots. This autumn, from October 2nd to December 1st, Biennial presents a wide educational programme devoted to families, art admirers, teachers and pupils. The programme is located in M. Žilinskas  Gallery (Nepriklausomybės a. 12, Kaunas) and Kaunas Picture Gallery (K. Donelaičio g. 16, Kaunas).

Kaunas Biennial has received acclamation for a mastery in attracting different cultural audiences – this year the biennial pays a special attention to an educational programme and has the same desire as always – to attract as wide range of creative society as possible. “This year, Kaunas Biennial seeks to establish a new relationship between an art work and its spectator which would allow to perceive art as universal text, universal language (of art), connecting different experiences and attitudes together” – says Kaunas Biennial artistic director Virginija Vitkienė.

“Even though a business man, looking at the same piece of art, will receive a different message than a primary school pupil, still every piece of art can speak to everyone. Therefore, the purpose of the educational programme is to discover the universal language of art and set it free, take it as a tool for a dialogue, communication, learning process or simply a pleasing conversation” – adds the curator of educational programme Vėjūnė Sudarytė.

This year, educational programme consists of three parts which are orientated to different target audiences. Throughout October and November, every weekend, from 12 am to 4 pm, Kaunas Picture Gallery and M. Žilinskas Gallery will host creative workshops for families – both small and grown up admirers of art.

The most passionate art admirers longing for a closer acquaintance with art will have a possibility to see Kaunas Biennial through the vision of famous Lithuanian artists. Three special tours by Vita Gelūnienė (September 21st), Virginija Vitkienė (September 28th) and Rasa Andriušytė-Žukienė (November 16th) will be presented. Admirers of art are also invited to join the meetings with the emerging artists. These meetings will take place on October 10th, 20th,  24th, 31st and November 7th, 10th, 14th, 16th, 21st, 23rd, 28th and 30th in Kaunas Picture Gallery and the Old Town Club (Vilniaus g. 34, Kaunas).

Educational programme pays, of course, a special attention to education: educators of Biennial, artists and teachers of Kaunas Gediminas Sports and Wellness school have prepared a special programme “Learn together with Kaunas Biennial”, devoted to schools. “Learn together with Kaunas Biennial” is a series of alternative biology, chemistry, literature and other subjects’ lessons. Lessons will take place on every Wednesday of October and November in Kaunas Picture Gallery and M. Žilinskas Gallery. Educators of Kaunas Biennial will be the teachers, in their classes, pupils will learn about molecular composition of chemical compounds whilst beading, experience the possibilities of genes engineering whilst making collages and prepare for literature assignments when looking at pieces of art. “We hope that these tasks will not only help students to understand their school subjects better but also it will encourage their desire to get to know those subjects more in depth.

Art exhibitions can be more beneficial than we tend to think. Choreographers can create  new dance compositions, students – prepare for their final maths exam, businessmen could get new ideas in marketing. Therefore, we want people to know about the vast possibilities art gives us. In this case, to present a new, not very traditional tool for teachers which would help in their hard work,” – says Vėjūnė Sudarytė.

Educational programme of Kaunas Biennial invites families, pupils and their teachers, university students, elderly people, men and women, businessmen, scientists, and artists altogether to discover and create the universal language of art, to learn and to teach it. Visitors will discover creative workshops, interactive projects, discussions, meetings with artists, non-traditional lessons and many more pleasant experiences.
