On November 30th (Thursday) at 6pm the opening of two exhibitions will take place in Meno Parkas Gallery (Rotuses sq. 27, Kaunas), the solo exhibition “Form of Word” by sculptor Danielius Sodeika and solo exhibition “For Grown-up Children” by artist Arvydas Žalpys. Do not miss the chance to visit!

Danielius Sodeika. Form of Word

Danielius Sodeika’s solo exhibition “Form of Word” presents sculptural objects from recent years, mostly made of wood or, in search of an extension of meanings, in duet with another material. The forms of the works are minimalist – it seems that the author listens to nature, follows it, and intervenes only to accentuate what he has heard or understood. This exhibition is a dialogue between form and word. Daniel is a linguist by nature and is always looking for the meanings of words in his everyday life, so the objects that emerge from them appear naturally, in the course of his work.

Words have certain consonances of sounds and emotions that dictate form. “I have a word and I associatively make a work based on that word. For example, silver as a word is associated with the emotion of cleanliness, chastity, and it was important for me to show this word in what way to create a space for it, to go closer and closer to this object.”

In this exhibition, the titles of the works are unnamed, and the artist invites you, the audience, to become active participants – to contribute your own interpretations, to give the visual forms a sonic, verbal expression. “I wonder if there will be some new combinations of sounds. I want to try to play with what is an object and what is a word. I would like the work to find its own name. In this way my concept would make sense.”

Special thanks to the Lithuanian Council for Culture for the scholarship and to the Creativity and Employment Centre.

Arvydas Žalpys. For Grown-up Children

In the solo exhibition “For Grown-up Children” Arvydas Žalpys presents a decade of video footage. It is a journey around the globe, trying to find The Little Prince. “In two projections, I depict life as if through the eyes of a child. There are shots of me descending from the top of the earth to the bottom; there’s a lot of gloomy sky, but it’s undefined and unreachable, and the sea is just around the corner, its waves crashing on the shore…”

Arvydas Žalpys notes, that even then, in the forties, Exupéry talked about the disconnection between people, yet nothing has changed. “I miss the connection, the sincerity; now everyone wants to be the most important.”

As the artist travels, he seeks to immerse himself in a world of naive but sincere fantasy, calling on us to forget everything and allow ourselves to fall into a non-existent reality. He invites passengers, uncaring which direction the train is heading, to become thrill-seeking children once again: pressing their faces against the windows and imagining unimaginable landscapes. At the bottom of the earth, the waves bounce off the shore, and the sun rises from above.

The exhibitions is supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Lithuanian Artists’ Association

The exhibitions at Meno Parkas Gallery will be open until 23rd of December.
