Philip Pilekjær has created a new digital video piece for his exhibition at Kim?, which will be shown both online and in the exhibition space itself. It mimics the popular Youtube genre known as “lofi”, which typically makes use of pre-existing clips taken from animated films, frequently Japanese anime, as visuals for extensive playlists of mellow beats, intended to function as ambient backdrops for other activities such as reading or studying.
In order to produce such a video in a convincing manner, Pilekjær has commissioned The Jazz Hop Cafe, a YouTube channel and record label specialized in lofi music, as well as Nam Hai Art Design Company, a Hanoi-based animation studio, to create a video which depicts a fictionalized scene from Kim? itself, providing an opportunity to view the institution in a different way–literally as a cartoon.
Philip Pilekjær (b. 1988) is an artist and editor of PROVENCE Magazine. In recent years his work has been presented within exhibitions at Sangt Hipolyt (Berlin), XYZ collective (Tokyo), Christian Andersen (Copenhagen), The Downer (Berlin), Longtang (Zürich), Silberkuppe (Berlin) and Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen) among others.
