Closing exhibition of the ‘Mark Rothko’ symposium

At 4 p.m. on Friday 25 September, the 16th international painting symposium “Mark Rothko” will conclude with the opening of an exhibition by its participants and a public meeting with the artists.

This year, Mark Rothko’s 117th birthday, 25 September, will coincide with the conclusion of the 16th international painting symposium “Mark Rothko”. Inspired by the great artist’s philosophy, the ambience of his hometown Daugavpils and its famous fortress, symposium participants spent a fortnight creating artwork that will continue to embody and preserve the living memory of Mark Rothko, the brilliant master of the brush.

The closing exhibition of the symposium will include the work of artists Vija Zariņa (Latvia), Kaspars Zariņš (Latvia), Nataļja Marinoha (Latvia), Uldis Čamans (Latvia), Romualdas Balinskas (Lithuania), Tomas Rudokas (Lithuania) and Rose-Mari Torpo (Finland).

Musical accompaniment to the opening ceremony will be provided by guitar virtuoso Reinis Jaunais and cellist Erna Daugaviete, who will perform fragments of their joint concert programme “Earth.”

As a satellite event on the 25 September programme, the centre offers a public showing of a short film about Daugavpils Fortress by production company VFS Films (1999). The historical recording will be presented by its producer Elvita Ruka at 3 p.m.

Admission to the events is free of charge.
