We invite you to the opening of the new art space Asaba on October 10th 19:00 at Gerosios Vilties g. 5, Vilnius.

ASABA is a feminist space founded by artists Gabrielė Gervickaitė and Saulė Elena Jurgelytė. The main idea of this place is to represent and focus on the creativity of women artists, queer artists, immigrants, and people with disabilities. It’s a place for workshops, film screenings, performances, exhibitions, and other artistic actions.

We are opening the space with Aistė Radzevičiūtė’s exhibition free.99, a performance by Kazys Ričkus and Viltė Barbora Vilūnaitė The rain floods your ears, and music by DJ Sad Cat.

Aistė Radzevičiūtė is an artist whose practice explores themes of social and economic inequality, urbanization, and subcultures. She examines the issues and poetics of various social layers in contemporary art and everyday life. Her creative process combines traditional and experimental sculpture techniques.

free.99 is an American slang term the artist learned while working at a mountain retail store in a national park in the U.S. The phrase means to get something for free, but with the undertone that one will somehow pay for it eventually. The added number “99” mocks the familiar retail prices seen in stores (2.99, 1.99, 0.99). Through this exhibition, the artist reflects on values and worth—on the financial challenges faced by art graduates, where art becomes a secondary or even tertiary activity, resembling a hobby more than a socially recognized paid profession; on identity search and escapism amid the collapse of democratic values; and on the search for places in non-places.

Kazys Ričkus – studies contemporary sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His works often emerge from everyday experiences, where art becomes a tool for deconstructing and rethinking surrounding structures. His practice merges artistic expression with theory, examining processes of social identity, power relations, and the formation of desire.

In the passing of sonic landscapes, the sound of your movement becomes a ripple in a sea of waves. Each step expresses your being and guides you through the walking practices of everyday life. The flow of your feet declares your position in relation to your surroundings. From quick, sharp stomps of someone in a rush to the slow, meditative rhythms of a wanderer. Vibrations travel through the small tunnel of your ear, transforming it into electric currents, which the mind interprets as sound. In this moment when a fraction of a volt (typically -40 to -90 mV) gets interpreted as sound I try to catch ever forming, dissembling and reassembling of consciousness.

Shoes become an extension of movement. Tools that shape and guide your movement in imperceptible ways. They amplify the movement expressed in the simple act of walking. Turning it into a production of ever shifting soundscapes. Each step can be seen as a declaration of presence in space. As a gesture of inner rhythms seeping into the outer. Converting the invisible into vibrations.

Walking itself is a practice of creation. It produces not only physical trajectories but also mental and sonic landscapes. With every step, a space of it’s own (un espace propre) is composed. One that lasts just a moment and can only be caught by a conscious mind.

Curator Viltė Barbora Vilūnaitė will join Kazys Ričkus in the performance.

Viltė Barbora Vilūnaitė is a young cultural worker, actively working and collaborating with contemporary artists. Currently they are curating contemporary art exhibitions and writing texts in various formats. They are interested in the topics of institutional critique, the evolution of the concept of museums, and various sensory sensitivities.
