The biennial of contemporary art, Tallinn Photomonth’21 (1 September to 17 October 2021) is pleased to announce an open call for satellite programme projects.
We welcome collectives, artists, curators, researchers, designers, writers, and transdisciplinary thinkers to enter. Projects may be proposed by established organizations and new platforms. Exhibitions, book launches, art performances, walks, book readings, and other similar formats are all considered suitable satellite projects. The projects can take place in a private or public space in Tallinn and the near vicinity and will preferably tie in with the themes of the Tallinn Photomonth ’21 main programme. Exhibitions and events should take place during the biennial in September and October 2021.
The objective of the Tallinn Photomonth ’21 satellite programme is to supplement the biennial’s main programme by introducing a broad range of artists, exhibition venues and creative initiatives to local and international visitors. On this occasion, the biennial’s main programme will focus on coping and adaptation strategies and creating community in complicated, watershed times. Tallinn Photomonth considers contemporary image culture important but strays from the traditional methods of photography to highlight new ways of seeing and looking in society. This year, a new and important area of focus is encouraging cooperation between Estonian and Russian cultural communities, as well as engagement with local ethnic minorities.
Artistic director of Tallinn Photomonth ’21 Kulla Laas said that for the first time, the satellite programme comes with stipends intended to help to catalyze collective and community initiatives that would, in turn, lay the groundwork for potential longer-term collaborations. Laas stated, “The introduction of these grants is our way to support the initiation of experimental activities that go beyond conventional exhibition spaces and open up social problems and opportunities for discussion in urban space.”. Two projects will be awarded 500 euros each, a total of 1000 euros.
Projects selected for the Tallinn Photomonth ’21 satellite programme will be:
– introduced in the biennial’s official communication channels;
– represented in the biennial’s press materials;
– introduced to international professionals and included in biennial-centred events;
– included in the biennial’s public programme.
All project organizers are responsible for finding their own (exhibition) site and covering their project-related expenses.

Projects will be selected by the organizers of Tallinn Photomonth ’21 in cooperation with the advisory board. Participants will be notified of the results by 14 May 2021.
The biennial’s main exhibition, held at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM), is curated by the TOK Creative Association of Curators from St. Petersburg (Anna Bitkina and Maria Veits). In addition to the international group exhibition, Tallinn Photomonth ’21’s main programme also includes a programme of artist’s films at Sõprus Cinema, an international symposium held for the first time as part of the biennial, and the Foto Tallinn art fair at Kai Art Center. Once again, this year’s Tallinn Photomonth will include a weeklong international networking event for art professionals.
