RHIZOME OF CONNECTIONS
Date: 2023-06-02 – 2023-06-17

Rhizome of Connections is the final Master’s work exhibition by Liucija Dervinytė, from the Department of Textile Art and Design, Vilnius Academy of Arts.

Rhizome of Connections – is an art installation presenting Liucija Dervinytė’s artistic research that delves into the crisis of the Anthropocene through creation and its processes. In the face of an overwhelming amount of disconcerting information regarding the planet’s changing ecosystem, pollution and other consequences of human activities on earth, the artist invites to look at one of the potential root causes behind this unsettling imbalance: the split between nature and culture. This dualistic image is notably manifested in consumerist capitalist societies, characterized by individualism and a pursuit of dominion over the “other.” Liucija seeks to explore the ways in which art can actively contribute to the formation of meanings and worldviews, facilitating a perceptual shift that helps to see the connections between seemingly unrelated domains – personal experiences, interpersonal relationships and nature.

This rhizome is a collage of connections – a reference to the multi-layered network of nature, with its many components, each exerting its influence on the overall system. Conversations, fragments of words and images construct a narrative of our interconnectedness. This is not only an individual but also a collective creation inviting exhibition visitors to take part – embroidering a repurposed bedsheet that serves as a basis for slow dialogues and the exchange of ideas during a meditative creative process. Anyone interested can leave their mark on the fabric or partake in the embroidery gatherings scheduled throughout the exhibition.

Dates of the embroidery meetings:
3 June – 12pm.
4 June – 12pm.
16 June, during Culture Night – 8pm and 10pm (https://www.facebook.com/events/174552405241581).
