Photo reportage from the exhibition ‘Patterns’ by Egle Jauncems in Skapiskis, Lithuania

TEMA Projects is pleased to announce a solo show of London-based artist Egle Jauncems in Skapiškis, Lithuania.

The latest project of Jauncems takes inspiration from the life and work of Paulinas Kaluina (1933-2017), a Lithuanian sacristan and shoemaker, who devoted his life to creating new weaving patterns. Over his lifetime, Kaluina produced more than 200 patterns, but never attempted to realize them on fabric. Most of his patterns are included in the book Love for Mother In Weaving patterns (ed. Dalia Bernotaite-Bieliauskiene, 2004). From contemporary perspective, the patterns appear to be very modern and almost resemble computer-generated images. However, the humble personality of the folk artist and his lonesome lifestyle is what inspired Jauncems’ latest project.

The principal aspects of Egle Jauncems’ practice develop thorough a continuous search for the parallels between the rational and irrational, contemporary and primitive, and the relevant and irrelevant. The starting point of her visual analysis often revolves around found imagery, textual fractions and overheard conversations. Later, she transforms these fragments – through the act of painting, drawing and stitching – into objects, or even beings, of pathos and irony.

In the exhibition, Jauncems presents the works made in weaving technique on paper and canvas. To grasp the authenticity of Kaluina’s life, they are exhibited at the artisan’s homestead in Skapiškis.

The exhibition is as a part of the XXV International Festival of Generation Theatres , and took palce in August 2021.

Egle Jauncems (b. 1984) currently works and lives in London. Before beginning her first BA degree in Sinology at Vilnius University she was actively involved in the alternative music scene in Vilnius as a recording and performing artist. Jauncems spent almost 4 years exploring and living in the Far East and moved back to Europe to complete her second BA degree from Chelsea College of Arts in 2013. In 2017 Egle completed her MA degree in painting at the Royal College of Art.
