Andres Tali’s solo exhibition i n t e r m e z z o. Images and Transformations. opened in Draakon gallery on February 20. The exhibition will remain open until March 16, 2024.

intermezzo (in Italian) – a short piece intended to be performed in between parts of a larger composition.

Andres Tali: “The images and transformations that were the source of this set of works have been noted down as fragments during the year 2023, and took their final shape by the beginning of January 2024. I felt the need return to the origins of my creative journey, but as always it turned out to be unachievable – it is impossible to step into the same river twice. Yet, during this process, another way of being has emerged.

There is no need to look for socio-political statements in my work. It is an emotion-based communication from the author to the viewer that relies on the (sub)consciousness in its specific visual language. The author does not intercept the stream of consciousness with brutally mundane comments. Perhaps this is his statement about the contemporary condition.

The preparation of the exhibition was going full steam ahead, when in the middle of January, a blind chance in the form of an accident intervened. The completion of the works proved impossible. But maybe it was better that way, as the works have more sketchiness, air and emotionality, and are much less bluntly finished.”

Andres Tali (1956) graduated from the Estonian National Art Institute in 1980, with a degree in graphic art. He has worked as an art editor and as the head of the art editorial department of Eesti Raamat, once the largest publishing house in Estonia, and has also worked as an AD of an advertising agency. Tali has been an active freelance artist, graphic designer and photographer for many years. He has been a professor in the Department of Fine Arts, dean of the faculty and vice-rector in the Estonian Academy of Arts. He has been socially active participating in the governing bodies of the Estonian Artists’ Union, as well as in the council of the Tallinn Graphics Triennale, and was a member and chairman of the council of KUNO, a cooperation organization of art universities in the Nordic and Baltic countries. He has been granted the Grand Prix of the Tallinn Graphics Triennale, three annual awards from various panels of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Kristjan Raua award, the Baltic Assembly award and dozens of awards from Estonian and Baltic book design competitions.
