Photo reportage from the exhibition 'Chains of Freedom, Wires of Connection' by Jelena Škulis at Polaris de Corbas

The exhibition Chains of Freedom, Wires of Connection by Jelena Škulis at Polaris de Corbas space in France is on view until November 15.

Jelena Škulis is a Lithuanian artist and researcher whose work is based on the link between matter and community. In her work, the artist evokes political and social issues with poetry and through the prism of the individual perspective. She uses the manual labour of weaving different materials and develops a performative action based on everyday language.

Using a multitude of languages, from the most widespread such as English to the most confidential such as Zulu, Jelena Škulis highlights in her installation the multiple conversations between different cultures, the intangible connections between spaces, people, and the multiplicity as well as universality of symbols.

For her first solo exhibition in France, at the Polaris in Corbas, she made an installation that allows a dialogue between existing works and her new pieces, which were created during a residency in July at Moly-Sabata (in Isère). Sensitive to the century-old history of the textile industry in the region, she immerses the audiences into the material made of intertwining, linking and weaving, as if to remind us that we are interwoven threads in the veil of the world.

This exhibition is organised as part of the Season of Lithuania in France 2024 and the Ciconia Ciconia project (led by Studio Ganek, Lyon and LIAA, Vilnius, together with La Halle, centre d’art contemporain de Pont-en-Royans and Polaris de Corbas), and in partnership with Moly-Sabata Résidence d’artistes / Fondation Albert Gleizes.

The Season of Lithuania in France 2024 is organized by the Lithuanian culture Institute and the French Institute in Paris. In Lithuania: by the Lithuanian Culture Institute under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in France, Commissioner Virginija Vitkienė.
