Kai Art Center’s core program, the Kai Residency, invites artists, curators, and writers from Nordic and Baltic states to apply for its 2025 residency program.

The residency provides an opportunity for selected participants to live and work in Tallinn for up to two months while being immersed in the city’s dynamic art scene. With this call, Kai Residency will be accepting five Nordic or Baltic applicants who will join the 2025 cohort. The residency will take place between March and June or September and December 2025.

The Kai Residency aims to support innovative practices, develop global networks, and engage the local art community in Tallinn. Residents must commit to six to eight weeks in full-time residence in Tallinn, be prepared to participate in the local art context, and make full use of Kai Art Center’s resources.

Residents will be invited to participate fully in all activities at Kai Art Center, including exhibition tours, talks, screenings, and seminars. They will also be expected to present one public program (a talk, screening, gathering, or another event) to introduce their work and research to local audiences.

Kai Art Center will cover all costs for residents, including travel to and from Tallinn, local transport, accommodations, administrative support, and per diems. The resident will have a desk in the Kai shared office space and access to all the center’s facilities. Workspace will not be offered, so the program is geared towards professionals with research-based practices (e.g., artists, curators, writers).

Applicants

Applicants should have a professional practice of at least five years. Collectives with a track record of collaboration will also be considered if they are willing to share living space. Applications are open to residents of the Nordic states (Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Åland) or the Baltic states (Latvia, Lithuania). Applicants do not need Nordic or Baltic nationality.

To apply, please email residency@kai.center a single PDF no larger than 10MB containing the full application form, 10 work samples, press and publication texts, and one reference letter. All applications must be received no later than December 5, 2024, and applicants will be notified of the results by December 18, 2024. Applications will be reviewed by a professional jury consisting of Kai Residency alumni, Kai Art Center staff, and invited curators.

The application form can be downloaded here. Please use Adobe Acrobat Reader or a similar program to fill out the form and maintain the fillable PDF format.

Kai Residency is supported by Nordic Culture Point and Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
