For the second year in a row, the VAA (Vilnius Academy of Arts) Artifex gallery symbolically dedicates the month of September to VAA students. This exhibition is no exception –Conversions is an exhibition by three textile artists who are MA students of the VAA Textile Art and Design department. This is the first time that gallery visitors will be able to take a look at unfinished master’s projects – personal explorations, discoveries and transformations – and take part in a kind of interim review.
The concept of this exhibition has been dictated by the parallel between the heavily intensified virtual world, the study process and artistic research. Since master’s programmes usually last for two years, these artists spent their first year studying entirely online. This was highly unusual and was a significant challenge for the textile students – they could not use workshops, and all lectures, consultations and evaluations took place remotely.
A conversion is a virtual unit of measure or a term which is usually used in the digital advertising market when the objective is to calculate and define a specific virtual action that is useful to an online business. A conversion could be the action of clicking on a promotional text, purchasing an online service or a visit to your website and so on. In other words, when a person, intrigued by your advertisement, becomes your client, i.e., when they become ‘engaged’.
In the context of virtuality in reality, this exhibition becomes a sort of advertisement for the artists’ personal and highly different subjects awaiting your positive assessment, while your engagement in the artistic process becomes a part of the exhibition and even a sort of conversion.
