On Wednesday, February 21 at 6 p.m., Grisli Soppe-Kahar’s solo exhibition Mother’s World opens in Hobusepea gallery. The exhibition will remain open until March 18, 2024.

Grisli Soppe-Kahar: “The series of paintings Mother’s World was largely completed in 2023-2024, but the prequel to the series, in the form of paintings, started in 2021.

When living in a mother’s world, the perception of time changes. Time neither contracts nor expands – both processes happen simultaneously. This feeling also extends to some other areas of life. Personality also expands and contracts – being a huge and integral part of someone’s life. However, the autonomy that existed before motherhood is now unattainable. The child fills the mother’s life, but does not take away her own “I”. Rather, the feeling deepens and strengthens – I understand my views more clearly and express them to myself and the world more boldly than ever before.

The world and the weather always exist alongside us, they are the background that contrasts us with the surroundings. Mother is a title that epitomizes the whole, but it is still just a part. The Mother’s World series shows a fraction of my experience as a mother. A meaningful fraction, and it also underlines the shift in my focus as an artist while being a new mother. As in my earlier work, symbolism, which often explains some situations more clearly than words ever could, plays an important role in this series.”

Grisli Soppe-Kahar (1990) is a painter who lives and works in Tallinn. She has graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of the Estonian Academy of Arts, holding a BA (2014) and MA (2016) in painting. In 2017, she had a large-scale exhibition together with Danel Kahar in Tartu Kunstimaja. In the summer of 2018, she participated in an artist residency in Mazzano Romano, Italy together with Danel Kahar. Her previous solo exhibition took place in 2021 in Tallinn Portrait Gallery (Someone Else). In addition to painting, Kahar is also a teacher for children with special educational needs, which has also had an influence on her as an artist. The main themes of her expressive paintings are drawn from her personal experience.
