The festival ‘Where the Roots Grow Deep’ at ‘Ubiškės3’ (Ubiškės village 3, Telšiai district, Lithuania) will take place on September 14.
The entangled root system below us is calling to remember the reciprocal nature of life on Earth. What does it mean to live together, eat together and dream together? Five artists arrived on the full moon to Ubiškės3 for a month to practise conviviality in the ongoing harvest season. Everyday, the mornings start earlier as the residents sync with the rhythm of the land. Through museum visits, workshops and swamp walks where giants bathe, they have been thinking about belonging, care and desire in relationship to each other, the land and people that surround them.
Collectively, they dreamed up a being, rooted to the land that’s here, filled with memories, its heart bleeding beetroot red. Perceiving the land as animate creates a different kind of relationship between oneself and the present, past and future. Reimagining our place in ‘the larger than human multi species community’ allows for alternative stories to appear. Feeding the local mosquito population is part of walking through the forest to gather mushrooms. We thank the chanterelle risotto for dinner, flavoured with kernels of sand between our teeth. Each day, the swim in the lake goes further as we befriend the underwater web of plants. Gathering the rotten apples underneath the tree of life we gift them to the deers and wild hogs. Where no one is a mother, care becomes all encompassing.
The group show Where the roots grow deep is the culmination of this being and togetherness. We invite you to explore the root system that has emerged from this process.
