The exhibition presents works from the collection of the Vilnius Academy of Arts Museum and interpretations based on them by current students of the Painting Department.
SUGAR is an anniversary exhibition of the department, echoing Henri Bergson’s famous example of melting sugar, which seeks to turn away from a linear, chronological view and return to a sense of flow, change and difference, while remaining within the unity of temporal experience. This collaboration of generations and temporalities, carried out through visual and pictorial expression, brings together the different painters who have worked at the Academy and the images that have emerged between its walls, which, as single objects lying in the museum, have already settled into their own duration of existence. The students were invited to leave their teeth marks on them, to change them, to connect with them, to vary them – to dissolve in other images. The paintings that had become museum paintings were transformed into an undercurrent of new movements that merged with the original image, altering the taste of both the previous and the subsequent painting, an experience that united them.
