Exhibition ‘Erosion of Memory and Time’ by Miglė Križinauskaitė-Bernotienė at the Klaipėda Gallery

The exhibition “Erosion of Memory and Time” by Miglė Križinauskaitė-Bernotienė will open at the Klaipėda Gallery of the Klaipėda Department of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association (Bažnyčių St. 6) on August 18th at 5 pm.

“Erosion of Memory and Time” is an interdisciplinary film, video, photography and installation exhibition, which displays the author’s works, created between 2020 and 2022. These pieces rethink the phenomenon of memory loss.

Memories are a confluence of personal and collective memory, a secret and the sharing of a secret. Memories shaped by time and space change the perception of what is remembered and what is forgotten. The exhibition combines film works, video projections, loops, photographs, microcollages, objects, reflections of the creative process, light interventions in the gallery spaces – thus aiming to visually stimulate and articulate discussions about the concepts of the limitations of memory and the flow of time.

The artist’s works, which are characterized by a poetic, personal narrative, talk about memory and its fragility. Reality disappears before our eyes every moment – only that which manages to survive and find a place in memories remains, which, admittedly, are not eternal and unchanging hiding place either. Man is constantly trying to fight it. The exhibition responds precisely to society’s immeasurable attempt to perpetuate time and the desire to record everything, to construct memories, to forget about fear and to be forgotten. Memory, like the visual arts, frames our relationship to time, marking the moments that structure our lives, and movement and time, whether real or illusory, are essential elements of art.

Auto ethnography and fiction, the reality around us and forms of experimental art that destroy reality and imitate fading memories and images of passing time are intertwined in the works of this exhibition. The exhibited works are full of metakinetic elements and personal reflections, which are not necessarily connected to reality, on the contrary, they are manipulated and irrational – sometimes just fantasy.

This exhibition is the artist’s creative attempts to look back and look into the shadows of the past, attempts to stay in the time and space of the present and cautiously glance into the future. It is an attempt to create a dialogue with the viewer and to explore together the fragmentation of memory, which is echoed by the works exhibited in the exhibition. It is also an effort to remember that even documentaries that claim to be a direct reflection of reality are already mediated images and sounds.

Miglė Križinauskaitė-Bernotienė, born in 1987, is a creator of audiovisual arts, a director of experimental, documentary films, currently living and creating in Utena. In 2020 she graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (LMTA) with a master’s degree in film directing, and now she continues her artistic and scientific activities in art doctoral studies (LMTA), where she deepens her knowledge about the creative strategies of personal cinema, applies them in her creative practice and explores autoethnographic experimental documentary cinema.

The artist’s works include several disciplines: photography, collage, experimental and documentary, analog and digital moving images. She chooses to convey abstract ideas through a subjective and personal storytelling method. Her work usually explores the themes of memory and time, and documentary overlaps with experiments, creating a sense of hybridity. The author’s works are constantly actively shown at international experimental film festivals around the world.
