Exhibition ‘And the Wind Will Take Us Away’ at Stasys Museum in Panevėžys

This Saturday, 10 May, visitors to Stasys Museum in Panevėžys are invited to the opening of the new international exhibition “And the Wind Will Take Us Away”. The exhibition examines global shocks – from war and migration to climate change – combining visual art, sound and performance into one engaging story. On the opening day of the exhibition, spectators who have registered in advance will be able to see Arturas Bumšteinas’ performance “Navigation” from the series “Bad Weather”, as well as visit the museum free of charge.

Synthesis of earth and water

The main focus of the “And the Wind Will Take Us Away” concept is on the synthesis of earth and water. According to Lina Albrikienė, curator at Stasys Museum, the exhibition unfolds a multi-faceted, currently particularly relevant to the world, visual and sound map based on scientific and artistic research, which reflects different topics.

The exhibition develops the discourse of colonialism, which covers several centuries and the modern world, and its clear consequences for humanity. According to the curator, the exhibition reflects the events of the centuries, which in a certain sense are repeated today. The exhibition reflects not only the artists’ concern for our future, but also suggests stopping, pausing and responsibly considering what tomorrow holds.

21 artists, 5 countries and works that will not be there

The exhibition features 21 artists from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway, with special attention paid to artists from war-torn Ukraine. The main themes of the exhibition are war, migration, colonialist and imperialist discourse, territorial security, forced migration, trauma, historical and cultural memory, ecology and climate change.

The entire Stasys Museum team was deeply shaken by the news of a young Ukrainian artist who died in a war zone in April this year while carrying out a military mission. Late Marharyta Polovinko will be honored in memoriam. Unfortunately, her works will not be displayed, but their absence from the exhibition creates an indelible impact that strengthens the entire essence of the exhibition.

Visitors will see installations, paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and performance – the works created by artists whose eyes are focused on the complex situation in today’s world.

The artists represented in the exhibition are: Eero Alev, Katya Buchatska, Vija Celmins, Mindaugas Gapševičius, Kristaps Epners, Gabrielė Griciūtė, Nikita Kadan, Zhanna Kadyrova, Edith Karlson, Zoya Laktionova, Alina Lamakh, Kris Lemsalu, Dainius Liškevičius, Laura Põld, late Marharyta Polovinko, Viktoriia Rozentsveih, Solveig Settemsdal, Paulius Šliaupa, Jaan Toomik, Ivar Veermäe and Lina Albrikienė.

The exhibition is curated by Lina Albrikienė, architect – Sigita Simona Paplauskaitė.

In Stasys Museum underground car park – A. Bumšteinas opening performance

The exhibition “And the Wind Will Take Us Away” will be opened by the performance “Navigation” from the series “Bad Weather” – a project directed by artist Arturas Bumšteinas, in which baroque noise machines will come to life through the “scores” of meteorological maps. This work is a dynamic meditation on nature, the human relationship with the climate and the aesthetics of old technologies.
The performance, produced by “Operomanija”, will feature Gailė Griciūtė, Gitis Bertulis-Čerkelis, Gediminas Steponavičius, Elmyra Ragimova and Ieva Rižė.

The performance will be part of the opening event that will take place this Saturday, 10 May, starting 4:00 p.m. Entry to the museum and performance is free for museum visitors, the opening event will be translated into sign language and the museum will be open until 9:00 p.m. on that day.

The main visual of the exhibition features the work by Lina Albrikienė “Let’s Make The World Great Again“, 2020–2025. Photo by Lina Albrikienė.
