The presentation of Eighteen Black Cats is an occasion to get acquainted with the artist’s most recent project, developed during his residency at Rupert. It seeks to explore and celebrate alternative forms of community under late capitalism through the lens of internet technologies, machine intelligence, and the occult. The project treats the occult as a catch-all for forces not seen, activities unsanctioned, powers not formally recognised. Folk practices, ritual magick, radical acts of otherness.

Howard Melnyczuk is an artist investigating technology as a site in which sociopolitical structures are built and maintained. Building on a background in photography and film-making, his practice incorporates multimedia with computation, machine learning, and software-as-art.
