Kaunas Photography Gallery is pleased to announce an open call for its 2021 residency program. Photographers and artists, curators, critics and art historians who work with photography are invited to apply. A number of residencies are available. These usually last from 4 to 9 weeks and are held within the period 1 March–20 December. The deadline for all applications is 1 February 2021. Applicants can be of any nationality but must be based in Nordic–Baltic countries other than Lithuania (Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Åland, Latvia and Estonia).

Description: We are looking for candidates with an original approach, one which displays an attentiveness and sensitivity to Kaunas’s identity and culture, and its environmental characteristics. We hope to receive some compelling and ambitious proposals. Applicants will be evaluated through criteria including the artistic or professional excellence of their work, the quality of their proposal, and the extent to which the residency will contribute to their progress and be consistent with their creative goals and professional development.

Kaunas Photography Gallery will cover travel expenses and provide accommodation in an apartment or guest house in Kaunas city centre, a per diem and a €425 scholarship. Basic materials and equipment can also be provided.

Successful applicants are expected to give at least one informal public audio-visual presentation about their work and/or take part in some other kind of event during the residency.

HOW TO APPLY: Applicants should fill in the residency application form and send it by email to the address listed on the form, together with visual supporting material and a reference.

General information

Kaunas Photography Gallery residency was established in 2012. It provides a great opportunity for persons working in the field of photography to develop ideas and projects within a fully supportive working environment. In addition, residents often bring a unique outsider’s perspective to the subject of Kaunas and its environs.

Applicants can propose projects on any theme, but the topics of Kaunas modernism, contemporary humanist photography, and future visions of Kaunas will be specially welcome and have the potential to be included in future publications and projects. However, this is not an essential requirement.

Successful applicants will be given access to Lithuanian photography archives, a library of photographic publications and direct contact with Lithuanian photographers and the most relevant arts institutions. As we accept very few residents at a time, this enables a unique experience where introductions and assistance are specifically adapted to the residents’ own interests and practices.

Deadline for residency applications: 1 February 2021.

Dates and duration of residencies: From 4 to 9 weeks between 1 March and 20 December 2021.

Please email your application form to gintare@kaunasgallery.lt by 1 February 2021. Due to an expected high number of applications, only selected applicants will be notified.
