On Friday, 9 May at 6.30 pm, we kindly invite you to join us at the CAC Reading Room at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius for the launch of the publication When The Sun Is Low – The Shadows Are Long, published by Spector Books. The evening will feature a conversation between Anna Karpenko and Daniel Muzyczuk.
When The Sun Is Low – The Shadows Are Long opens up a window onto the shadowy historical, political and phenomenological territory of Belarus. It highlights the interplay between a deep engagement with tradition, the archaic, and cosmology on one hand, and a pursuit of pure modernist avant-garde form on the other. Through theoretical texts, poems, and interviews, the book presents twenty positions of Belarusian artists who reflect various forms of resistance to repressive systems – whether through the appropriation of ritual practices, artistic expressions of amateur cosmology, or the invention of new languages and games.
The publication is based on the group exhibition of the same name, which was shown at Arsenal Gallery in Białystok (PL) and Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig (DE) in 2022.
The event will be held in English and is free to attend. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
