CUT ART Gallery is set to unveil an exhibition “Bodies on Lines,” opening its doors on February 1, 2024, until March 31. The exhibition features the works of established artist Vahid Sharifian alongside emerging Latvian artists Alina Burlakova, Edgars Nikolajevs, and Roberts Balins. This unique collaboration promises a thought-provoking journey into the diverse interpretations of the human body by these talents.
Vahid Sharifian, a luminary in the art world, exhibited at renowned institutions such as the Ropac Gallery and the Venice Biennale. His illustrious career has been marked by critical acclaim, with features in ARTnews, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Art in America, among others. The curator and participant of “Bodies on Lines,” Sharifian, known for his coined art “Papa’ism,” brings a wealth of experience and a distinctive artistic voice to the exhibition. He also sheds light on the significance of the theme, stating, “Body is what the history of art after Renaissance has been obsessed with! All those artists’ practices were about the body and what the ideal body is. This ideal has changed over the years. But the subject of the body never gone away”.
Edgars Nikolajevs, a recent graduate of the Art Academy of Latvia, seamlessly combines painting, sculpture, and video to explore the intersection of mortality, technology, and the future. Nikolajev’s paintings offer a visual exploration of the human body, contemplating the evolving relationship between humans and technology, providing a glimpse into a possible future shaped by these dynamics.
Alina Burlakova employs a figurative approach to express abstract ideas. Her work reflects on life’s paradoxes and the evolving nature of our digitalized world. Alina’s art balances between making serious statements and embracing post-irony, capturing the essence of life through various media and experimental techniques.
Roberts Balins, the creator of the intriguing Cowboy series, offers a unique perspective on sculptural art. His sculptures, inspired by his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy, manifest as anthropomorphic forms with tubular limbs. “These are primitive feelings, which, when added together with the expressions of the other extremes, form a situation of complex feelings.”
