On Thursday, 22 May at 5 PM, the Rüki Gallery will hold the opening of the exhibition „False Vacationers Workcation Travels” by Sigrid Viir. The exhibition serves as a conceptual continuation of the artist’s personal exhibition recently held in the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) where the artist focused on the subject of blurring the borders between work and vacation in contemporary society.
The border between work and leisure time seems to become increasingly vague – this is also clearly proved by the use of the following neologisms such as workcation (also written as workation; work+vacation), bleisure (business+leisure), or bizcation (business+vacation) in English-speaking environments. According to George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (“Metaphors We Live By”, translated into Estonian and published by Tallinn University Press, 2011), the metaphors of the resources of work and time change the way we understood the concept of leisure time – and thus, leisure time is becoming something very similar to work.
Sigrid Viir (1979) is a photo and installation artist who lives and works in Tallinn. She studied cultural theory at the Estonian Institute of Humanities and graduated in photography from the Estonian Academy of Arts. As an artist, she is interested in the analysis of social constructions, the absurdity of everyday situations, the development of different roles for people (especially women), the border between the totality of work and personal leisure, and questions of visual language. Sigrid is one of the three founding members of the art collective Visible Solutions LLC. She has actively participated in exhibitions in Estonia and abroad.
