On February 13th at 6:00 PM, the exhibition “Bay” by sculptor Tauras Kensminas will open at the VAA exhibition halls “Titanikas” I floor exhibition hall.
“Bay” is a cohesive continuation of the artist’s creative explorations and experiments. In his artistic practice, Tauras Kensminas frequently returns to the theme of water as a boundless, intangible, all-encompassing substance essential for life.
“From the moment I began to consciously perceive myself, I’ve always felt an inexplicable attraction to water. The fear of its dark depths and the understanding that water is an essential condition for existence have always coexisted in my mind. Alongside this, the concept of water as a pathway is also significant. Theoretically, by traveling through or along water, one can reach almost any point on Earth. It is a path that cannot be destroyed – you can alter the course of a river or dam it, but the water will always find a way to seep through.” – Tauras Kensminas.
The exhibition also delves into the relationship between civilization and nature, exploring its evolving dynamics. Here, visions of dreams, threats, and a sense of a post-apocalyptic world emerge, accompanied by a distinctive brutal aesthetic. The artist experiments with various materials, seeking unexpected ways to use them. While previous exhibitions of Tauras Kensminas only subtly hinted at moods of unease and uncertainty, in “Bay”, the themes of survival and disappearance are more pronounced, openly expressed, yet still conveyed through a metaphorical and enigmatic narrative style.
Tauras Kensminas (b.1991) completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 2012, he has been actively involved in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad (including Italy, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, France, Germany), while also creating sculptures for public spaces. His works are part of the collections of the MO Museum, the Noewe Foundation, and private collections in both Lithuania and abroad. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania granted him the status of an artist, and in 2020, he became a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association.
