On Friday, November 22 at 17.00 A Shade Colder magazine hosts a panel discussion with editors from the Baltics and Nordics on the role and responsibility of art publications. The event takes place at the office the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art (Suur-Karja 23).Ten Baltic and Nordic art and culture editors are visiting Estonia this week and on 22 November will introduce their publications to the local audience during the discussion evening hosted by A Shade Colder. The discussion will explore the role of art and cultural publications in the Baltic and Nordic region in recent years, particularly in light of the escalating geopolitical situation, their international outreach and the responsibility these publications bear to their local art scenes.

Participants of the discussion include members of the Arts and Culture Magazine Publishers Forum network: Mariann Enge (Kunstkritikk, Norway), Vitalija Jasaite (Echo Gone Wrong, Lithuania), Viivi Poutiainen (EDIT, Finland), Hólmar Hólm (Art in Iceland, Iceland), and Elina Kempele (WunderKombinats, Latvia). The discussion will be moderated by Keiu Krikmann (A Shade Colder). The event will be held in English. The latest print issues of the publications will be on display during the event.

The magazine A Shade Colder has been published since 2022 and is one of the most unique English-language art magazines in the region. In addition to covering the Estonian art scene, it also publishes on art in the broader region, facilitating communication between art fields in different countries. Consequently, A Shade Colder became one of the founding members of the Arts and Culture Magazine Publishers Forum (ACMPF). ACMPF is a network that connects art and cultural magazines in the Baltic and Nordic countries. The network includes A Shade Colder (Estonia) published by the Center for Contemporary Art Estonia, Artnews.lt and Echo Gone Wrong (Lithuania), EDIT (Finland), Kunstkritikk (Norway), Art in Iceland (Iceland), and WunderKombinats (Latvia). The aim of the network is to maintain and enhance communication between publications in the Baltic and Nordic regions, build connections with writers, share knowledge and experiences to better manage the daily challenges faced by cultural publications, and find solutions while introducing readers to the works of new and exciting writers.

The discussion evening is part of the research trip of the Arts and Culture Magazine Publishers Forum to Helsinki and Tallinn. The activities of the network are funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture.
