During 8–30 November 2024, an exhibition titled “Young New Graphic Art: Metaphysics of a Book“ will take place at the Vilnius Graphic Art Centre’s Kairė–dešinė gallery. The exhibition opening will be held on 8 November 2024 at 5 pm. (Latako str. 3, Vilnius)
Now in its third year, the ongoing project „Young New Graphic Art“ focuses on the emerging generation of graphic artists and explores the contemporary graphic art scene. The show highlights both traditional approaches to graphic art and the relationship between graphic images / phenomena and interdisciplinary practices.
The exhibition showcases works by emerging graphic artists from the Department of Graphic Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. The selection includes books, book-objects, artist books, and installation-like book projects that incorporate space, sound, light, multimedia, and information technologies. These works rethink the concept of the book, offering alternative visual forms that transform the book into both an art object and a medium for interpreting and exploring existence, philosophy, aesthetics, and other complex themes.
The young artists featured in this exhibition raise key questions: What is a book, and how do we understand it today? How are our perceptions of books today influenced by factors such as prior knowledge, visual form, content, concept, materiality, or tactile experience? The exhibited works use artistic actions to challenge traditional notions of the book’s structure, matter, and aesthetic conventions, expanding the possibilities of its impact. Exploring new roles for the book as a medium of information, the exhibition reveals how the incorporation of contemporary media can extend the transmission of the book’s idea in novel formats. In this way, the book becomes an object of interpretation and philosophical inquiry – sometimes even surpassing its traditional function as a mere vessel for knowledge and data.
