This residency, organised by Artnews.lt, Echo Gone Wrong and AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions as part of the France-Lithuania Season 2024, aims to make visible the active role of Lithuanian women artists in the artistic production of the 20th and 21st centuries, and to highlight the cultural exchanges in which they took part.
The two-month residency at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris will provide the opportunity for research and writing which will be published on the AWARE website as well as shared through a public event.
Artnews.lt and Echo Gone Wrong
Artnews.lt is a cultural organisation focused on the analysis and dissemination of contemporary visual art. The organisation curates two online magazines – Artnews.lt and Echo Gone Wrong. Artnews.lt features regular exhibition reviews, interviews with artists, essays, photo essays from exhibitions and performances, and daily art news and events calendar. Echo Gone Wrong is an international contemporary art daily on-line, representing Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian contemporary art scenes. Other permanent projects curated by the organisation include Artbooks.lt, an online art bookstore.
AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions
AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions is a non-profit organisation, founded in 2014. To counter the underrepresentation of women in the art world, AWARE seeks to rebalance the presence of women artists by giving them more visibility through the publication of free resources. The bilingual French/English website provides more than 1100 biographies for women artists from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries as well as articles and interviews written by researchers and curators from around the world.
The Villa Vassilieff
AWARE is located in the Villa Vassilieff in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, where the artist Marie Vassilieff had her studio in the 1910s. In this highly symbolic space, reimagined by designer matali crasset, AWARE has set up a research and documentation centre entirely dedicated to women artists and feminist art. The programming brings together visitors, professionals and artists from the Paris region and draws upon its research programmes and a vast network of authors around the world. With this double identity, at once local and international, as well as a space open to the public, AWARE aims to encourage research, exchange and discussion around questions of gender and the recognition of women artists in history.
General conditions of the residency
Length of the residency: 2 consecutive months during the period September – December 2024
Accommodation: The resident will have an independent living and working studio of 44m² within the Villa Vassilieff.
Financial conditions: Payment of a round trip ticket between the place of residence and Paris, living allowance of 900 €/month, i.e., 1800 € for the entire residency.
Support offered by AWARE and Artnews.lt: The teams will make available their expertise and institutional, artistic and academic networks (museums, galleries, professionals, research centres, archives). The resident will also have access to AWARE’s resource and research centre, which contains more than 3,600 references on women and non-binary artists (monographs, critical essays, exhibition catalogues, etc.).
The resident will be invited to host an event at the Villa Vassilieff (conference/round table/masterclass) to present their research work. At the end of the residency, they will be invited to write a research article which will be published on the AWARE website.
Applications
Applications can be sent to appelaprojets@aware-art.org by 9 June 2024, and should include:
- A research proposal of 500 words maximum in English,
- A short letter of motivation, explaining your reasons for working at the Villa Vassilieff,
- A CV.
Interviews with the pre-selected candidates will take place at the end of June. The selection committee will be composed of Artnews.lt, EGW and AWARE. One applicant will be selected for the residency.
The project is part of the Lithuanian season in France 2024, organized by the Lithuanian culture Institute and the French Institute in Paris.
