Until 2 June Riga Photography Biennials 2024 exhibition ‘Vamp(yre) Reality’ by British artists Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent is on display in the Intro Hall of the exhibition hall ‘Riga Art Space’.

Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent are concerned with the nature of consciousness and how it shapes human life. Artists have developed a language of blending objects, environments, light, sound, VR and CGI. Their work often references human, animal and plant life with an ultimate desire to create a new philosophy of ‘metaphysical thought’ that can chime with the current science it evokes.

Seers and Sargent seek out the random events that may seem connected and causal but are not (taking a cue from Vilém Flosser’s ‘Towards a Philosophy of Photography’). They push the photographic programs to their limits, searching towards innovations both in their forms and processes. The state of photography seems to be most interested in ‘the mass of photography’ rather than its singular content (its ‘likes’ and redistribution). This runs against Seers and Sargent’s fascination for the agency of individuals, the specificity of their narratives, and their uniqueness. In the exhibition ‘Vamp(yre) Reality’ the portraits from an album found in a hidden bookshop in Riga are speaking, being brought to life by AI.

Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent live on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. They began working together in 2012 when Sargent was commissioned to develop digital animations and publications for Seers. This continued and has developed into a collaborative practice. They have shown large-scale works internationally in museums and art centres and their works are in several collections including the Tate Collection, Arts Council Collection, Artangel Collection, collection of MONA, Tasmania, The Government Art Collection, MTA Collection, Lebanon and many private collections.

The Riga Photography Biennial (RPB) is an international contemporary art event, focusing on the analysis of visual culture and artistic representation. The term ‘photography’ in the title of the biennial is used as an all-embracing concept encompassing a mixed range of artistic image-making practices that have continued to transform the lexicon of contemporary art in the 21st century. This year RPB is being held for the fifth time and focuses on contemporary issues of identity – both the essence of human and the role of the image in the face of the challenges of the 21st century. RPB 2024 exhibitions and events run until July 14. For more information: www.rpbiennial.com.
