The Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art callsl for applications to the LCCA Summer School What Do Contemporary Images Tell?. The LCCA Summer School will take place in a newly established artists’ residence at Ruckas Manor, Cēsis from 7–12 June, and become a meeting point for young and emerging artists, art critics, curators and managers from the Baltic States.
The central subject for the Summer school is the narrative forms in art and (con)textuality, the mutual relations between the narration and its structures, and how these refer to the latest processes and currents within contemporary art. Narrative forms will be inquired from various viewpoints: those of the artist, curator, producer and critic. Participants will study them during an intensive programme of theoretical and practical activities consisting of lectures, seminars, workshops, discussions, as well as the development of creative projects.
How and what is thought of, created and discussed in contemporary art? In what directions are the current art search and research heading? What are its instruments for activating critical thinking and engaging in socio-political processes? What is art’s role and capacity, engaging in the field of the contemporary “knowledge economy”? Answers to these and other questions at the LCCA Summer School will be sought both through current art experience and strategies, as well as from the perspectives of critical theory: post-colonialism, psychoanalysis, sexuality, natural and exact sciences, the viewpoints of contemporary and historical philosophy, memory studies and research into the recent past.
The Programme curator of the LCCA Summer School is art scholar Ieva Astahovska. Lectures and workshops will be conducted by internationally renowned artists, theoreticians and philosophers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and other European countries, including Jurij Dobriakov, Ainārs Kamoliņš, Flo Kasearu, Zane Kreicberga, Solvita Krese, Kęstutis Kuizinas, Žilvinas Landzbergas, Marko Mäetamm, Katrīna Neiburga, Monika Saukaitė, Krišs Salmanis, Jaanus Samma, Aaron Schuster, Jānis Taurens and others. Part of the summer school programme – lectures and presentations – will be open to the general public.
The discussions and lectures at the summer school will be held in English. The participation fee is EUR 80, which includes accommodation and meals.
