‘A Trip with Two Companions’ by Raminta Blaževičiūtė at the Rooster gallery

The Rooster Gallery presents the gallery’s new artist, painter Raminta Blaževičiūtė, and invites visitors to her first solo exhibition “A Trip with Two Companions”.

“A Trip with Two Companions” is a journey undertaken by imaginary travellers in the hope of leaving behind the earthly dirt and finding their own paradise. In the narrative created by Raminta, these two concepts – dirt and paradise – are personified, become alive and turn into companions of a metaphorical life journey: one of them leads astray, drowns and obstructs, and the other liberates and elevates. The artist herself becomes the main character, a traveller, and invites the viewer to do the same. Led by the painter and accompanied by Paradise and Dirt, the traveller takes to the road, in which reality is intertwined with dreams, and future prospects mingle with memories of the past. On the road, one gets to meet various characters symbolically embodying different stages of the trip and the traveller’s states. While testing the relations between the opposite poles, the artist is in constant search of their harmony and discovers paradoxes produced by the collision of opposites. The temporal dimension is also important: she emphasises the temporality of the journey, the transience of different states, and analyses the relation between “now” and “once”.

The artist creates many-layered narratives of her paintings out of personal experiences, cultural (literary, cinematographic) references, and theoretical insights. According to the painter, her creative process is reminiscent of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, or roaming around Jan Švankmajer’s narrow chambers, into which you can fit only in parts, and finally, awakening from a Borgesian dream. She challenges the monotony and predictability of daily life, and fights it with the help of alogisms, irony and elements of play and fairy tales. Thus, for her painting language the artist draws inspiration from primitive art, surrealism, and the principles of magical realism. She disregards the laws of perspective and anatomy, imitates the aesthetics of children’s work, and underlines the spontaneity of a drawing line or a brushstroke. A very important element creating the atmosphere of a fantasy dream in her paintings is the colour.

Raminta Blaževičiūtė (b. 1993) is a painter of the young generation. She completed her M.A. in painting at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2018. Since 2014, Blaževičiūtė has been actively participating in group shows, plein air painting sessions and competitions. In 2017, she became a finalist of the Algimantas Švėgžda Sixth International Drawing Competition.
