Tallinn Photomonth is an international festival of lens based art and visual culture, organised by the Union of Photography Artists of Estonia (Foku).
The main programme of the festival includes two major group exhibitions: Shadows of a Doubt at Tallinn Art Hall and Where You End, I Begin at Tartu Art House. The Photographic Art Fair takes place over the last weekend in October. The exhibitions and the fair serve as a platform for for a series of lectures, discussions, workshops and public events.
The festival aims to bring to the local public high profile exhibitions and events, introduce Estonian artists to international curators and critics and contribute to the development of contemporary art market in Estonia.
Foku, initiator of the festival, is a member organisation aiming to develop the professional field of lens based art in Estonia and abroad. Currently, Foku has 34 members.
The first Tallinn Photomonth took place in 2011 as part of the programme of European Capital of Culture. In 2011, various exhibitions and public events where visited by over 20,000 people in total. One of the festival’s central exhibitions,Beyond at Kumu, started a collaboration between curator Adam Budak and Estonian artist Dénes Farkas, which led to Evident in Advance, the project currently representing Estonia at the Venice Biennale.
The artistic leader of Tallinn Photomonth 2011 was Marge Monko. In 2013, the festival is curated by Kristel Raesaar.
In 2013, the varied programme of Tallinn Photomonth includes artists and visitors from 12 countries. For the first time, Photomonth expands outside the Estonian capital with an exhibition and events programme in Tartu, the country’s the second biggest town.
