Dubossarsky imageVladimir Dubossarsky (1964) is one of the best-known Russian contemporary painters. He first gained an international reputation before being recognised in his home country. In 1994, international fame was achieved when equal cooperation with Aleksandr Vinogradov (1963) started. The painters had studied together in art school and continued studies at the Surikov Art Institute. The successful joint creativity has been evidenced by exhibitions in acclaimed art institutions in Europe and the USA as well as by representing Russia at the Venice Biennale in 2003. The world’s most important museums have acquired works by the team. The recognised Russian art historian Viktor Misiano characterises the tandem as generation artists who, since the 1990s, have been capable of most expressively depicting the hallucinating visions, mistakes and contradictions of the post-Soviet period. In the year 2014, the cooperation that had lasted for 20 years came to an end and both artists returned to fully individual creation.

Vladimir Dubossarsky’s exhibition „Sweeter than Sugar” in Vaal Gallery is the first exhibition of his works in Estonia. In a way, the exhibition is a mix between painting and performance, as almost all of the works will be created throughout many weeks within the gallery. The exhibition hall has converted itself into the artist’s open studio where the works in progress will also be displayed. The artist is still unsure about the kind of works that will be created in the studio-gallery. The artist’s local good acquaintance, art curator Teet Veispak, describes the vision as „an attempt to renew one’s painting style and depictions by uniting everything with the momentary inner feelings”.

Since 2015, Vladimir Dubossarsky lives in Tallinn. As Dubossarsky has admitted he is inspired by the local sea views, it is probable that we will be able to see something location specific.

Since December 1st, the artist has taken over Vaal Gallery’s exhibition hall
