-“We need to think about how we should split up the company, you know, the stock or shares or whatever,” says start-up guy one.

-“Uh-huh,” replies start-up guy two.

-“Well, we need to do it because I’m getting my lawyer-brother-in-law to set up the corporation for us. He’s doing it for her but we need to pay the filing fee,”

– “Um, okay,”.

-“What do you want to do, I mean, how should we split it up?”

-“I’m not quite sure; I thought we could talk about it,”

-“Okay, yeah, that’s a good idea. Maybe we should split it 30/70,”

– “Right, I think that’s fair, it was my idea so 70% seems about right for me,”

-“Um, well, I thought I would rake 70% and you would be the 30% because I’m the developer and I’m doing all the work right now,”

-“Oh, err, you are doing a lot right now, but when the product is done I’ll be doing most of the work and it was my idea,”

– “Yeah, but there will still be a lot of upkeep on the program and we’re using my hosting acount so I think it’s only fair that I should get more,”

– `Dude! That’s not fair; you wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for me. I should get more than you,”

-`Dude! You couldn’t do this thing at all without me because you don’t know how to code. Besides, I added all the bells and whistles, your idea wouldn’t have worked the way you wanted is!”

– “That’s not true! I came up with the great idea, I am only thought of a little bit I can get
another developer in a heartbeat, your skills are replaceable!”

The dialog above is an excerpt from ‘Slicing Pie: Fund Your Company Without Funds’ (2012) by entrepreneur Mike Moyer. It describes rules of conduct about how to treat one another when it comes to the equity in a start-up company. Following an artistic, critical perspective towards chance economics, hypothetical products, symbolic capital and power games, DOGHME is the premise of a hypothetical start-up company. During the exhibition the enterprise will produce simulated experiences and solutions for augmented reality: a technology whereby digital content is added to a physical environment, augmenting what we perceive as ‘real’ with a new layer of perceptible information.

Robertas Narkus (b.1983, Vilnius.) describes his practice as the ‘management of circumstance in an economy of coincidence’. He brings together the ordinary and the absurd to explore notions of chance economics, hypothetical experiences and power games. Recently he exhibited at de XII Baltic Triennial, de Appel art center, Establiment de’ en Face, Brussels. Narkus is the founder of the Institute of ‘Pataphysics in Vilnius.

DOGHME by Robertas Narkus is supported by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. And a special thanks to Antanas Skučas.
