Second Call for Applications for the EIB Institute Artists’ Development Programme “The Imprint of Man – Representing the Anthropocene”

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Institute is pleased to announce the second edition of its Artists’ Developement Programme (ADP) both a mentoring programme and an artist’s residency, targeting visual artists (aged <35) from EU Member States focusing on “The Imprint of Man – Representing the Anthropocene”.

The successful applicant will be mentored by internationally acclaimed Polish artist Mirosław Bałka.

The EIB Institute aims to pay tribute to the extraordinary pool of creative talent in Europe.

The ADP provides an outstanding opportunity for an emerging visual artist to develop her/his practice at the highest level, while being mentored by a leading peer.

Thematic focus

The residency is open to all individuals wishing to develop their practice in a professional context by creating a new (body of) work(s) on the theme “The Imprint of Man – Representing the Anthropocene”, using photography, video, installations and/or new media.

Eligibility

Applicants should be under 35 years of age at the time of application, in keeping with the EIB Institute’s focus on promoting young or emerging talent. Applicants must have an EU nationality or reside in one EU country. In order to facilitate communications with the mentor and local artistic environment in Luxembourg, participants should be fluent in English.

Jury

Applications are evaluated by a selection jury consisting of members of the EIB Institute Arts Committee and staff, external arts professionals and the mentor. The jury bases its selection on the proposal submitted answering the creative brief, the potential impact of the residency on the applicant’s career, and the relevance of the applicant’s practice to the cultural context of the EIB Institute.

Budget and duration

The EIB Institute will take over the artist’s travel costs to and from Luxembourg and Warsaw. The artist in residence will also receive a stipend (EUR 100 per day). At the end of the residency, the participant will receive an artist fee of EUR 1,500.

Before or during the residency in Luxembourg, the winner will spend a few days visiting the mentor and experiencing the latter’s creative studio(s) in Warsaw. The duration of the residency in Luxembourg is 4-6 weeks, starting on 1 September 2014. The artist participating in the ADP will be provided a living/working space located in Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster, situated in the culturally rich Grund district of Luxembourg city.

Upon completion of the residency, the EIB might consider acquiring an artwork from the artist.

Application procedure

Requirements

—CV (in English);

—Scanned copy of the passport or identity card;

—A letter of motivation/intent specifying personal drive and expectations for the programme together with a concept for the theme proposed for the residency (maximum 500 words, in English);

—Portfolio of visual documentation of several works, best characterising the art of the applicant (in PDF, four A4 pages maximum);

—Names and contacts of two professional referees, familiar with the art of the applicant.

Any application which does not comply with the set requirements will be automatically eliminated.

Selection procedure

A jury will select the candidate for the residency to be held in September-October 2014 based on the proposed project, and the applicant’s potential to use the residency to maximum benefit.

The selected candidate will be informed of the jury’s result via email by the end of June 2014.

Deadline for application 16 May 2014 at midnight (GMT+1).

Applications must be fully completed and submitted in due time in order to be considered.

About Mirosław Bałka

Miroslaw Balka (born in Warsaw, 1958) is a leading Polish sculptor also active on the field of experimental video and drawing. In 1985 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he runs Studio of Spatial Activities at Department of Media from 2011. The artist received the Mies van der Rohe Stipend in Krefeld and is a member of Akademie Der Kunste, Berlin. His works were exhibited on numerous international shows such as: Documenta, Kassel (1992), Venice Biennale (1990, 1993, 2003, 2005, 2013),The Carnegie International, Pittsburgh (1995), Sao Paulo Biennale (1998), Sydney Biennale (1992, 2006), Santa Fe Biennale (2006).

Solo shows in 2013: fragment, Centre for Contemporary Art / Vinzavod, Moscow; Touch me / Find me, Studio K, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki; Nachtgesichten, WRO Art Center, Wroclaw; Signaalit / Signals, IHME Contemporary Art Festival, Helsinki; The Order of Things, Gladstone Gallery, New York.
