Reopening of RIXC gallery – rediscover light as a source of sound in Paula Vitola’s exhibition ‘Waves – Lights – Shadows’

From May 21, RIXC gallery at Lenču street 2, will be reopened, offering an opportunity to visit Paula Vitola’s exhibition “Waves – Lights – Shadows” until June 13. The exhibition’s works show artistic experiments and attempts to understand through them seemingly self-evident phenomena – sound and light. By using light as a source for sound, it makes intangible and invisible phenomena visible, opening up new possibilities for experimentation. From 21 to 23 May and from 4 to 6 June, the artist Paula Vitola herself will present the exhibition at the RIXC gallery. From May 21, it will be possible to get acquainted with the exhibition within the new working hours of the RIXC gallery – the gallery will be open from Thursday to Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00.

So far, the artist has created various prototypes for using light as a source for sound production – performance tools that can produce sounds, using motors, strings, Christmas lights, water bottle and other items; a sound recorder using a mirror and sunlight instead of a microphone; as well as a device for listening to the sounds of insect wings.

In the exhibition works, light is used to create sound, using the principle of photoacoustics, which Alexander Graham Bell discovered already in 1880. The exhibition presents the artist’s experiments, including sketches of the work, prototypes and tools for creating sound. With the artworks, the creation of sound and experimentation becomes an exciting, playful process that the exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to try out. Until May 20, it will also be possible to view a 360° exhibition video tour guided by the exhibition’s curator Raitis Smits, at the RIXC Virtual Gallery:

Paula Vitola is an artist and lecturer at the Liepaja University who works mainly in the field of media art and art research; more recently she has started to focus on sound art. In the creative field, the artist is experimenting with different technologies, natural and physical phenomena, trying to understand them, looking for new ways of expression and how to use them.

The exhibition ”Waves – Lights – Shadows” is open until June 13, 2020.
