Presentation and talk by Catherine Chevalier and Tobias Kaspar at kim? Contemporary Art Centre

may_coverkim? Contemporary Art Centre cordially invites you to a presentation and talk New Formats by Catherine Chevalier and Tobias Kaspar. The event will take place at kim? Contemporary Art Centre on Wednesday, September 28, 7pm on the occasion of the last issue of May magazine, Fashion in Crisis.

Crisis can be seen as an opportunity to rethink the modes and formats of production and reception not only in the fashion industry but also in the art world. There is an urgent need to create new formats/models as we are faced by outworn formulas everywhere.

What are the new formats that matter – or mattered  in the past – and that can function outside oversaturated cities, in the peripheries of the art world but at the same time at the heart of the informational mainstream? This brings us back to the internet and low cost flying as a unique opportunity of the last 15 years. It’s been only 15 years.

How to build new territories/spaces/formats in the center/hub of art activities? In Riga, for example?

May, founded in 2009 by Catherine Chevalier and Eva Svennung, is a bilingual (French/English) publication released three times a year, based in Paris. Conceived as an experimental platform for new forms of criticism, May proposes to examine matters pertaining to the field of contemporary cultural production through the publication of essays, exhibition reviews and interviews with international contributors varying from scholars to critics, artists, writers and curators.

Catherine Chevalier, is a Paris-based art critic and editor. Co-founder and editor in chief of May. Guest teacher at HEAD (Haute Ecole d’art et de design) in Geneva.

Tobias Kaspar (born 1984, Basel) is an artist who has recently moved to Riga. He owns his namesake jeans line and most recently staged THE STREET at the Cinecittà lm studios in Rome (2016).

Discussion will be held in English and will be open to the public.
