Artifex Textile Gallery of the Vilnius Academy of Art present My Parents’ Room, a project by Aurelija Maknytė.
The rooms of the gallery lend space to an intertwining exposition of objects and texts associated with the lives of the artist’s parents and the unknown parents of others. The artist manipulates the elements of this exhibition in order to create a narrative that has an inevitable continuity beyond the limitations of the exhibition itself. “As far back as I can remember, I always hoped to reveal some kind of secret or solve a puzzle of some sort in my parents’ room. Even though my parents are now long gone, I have yet to reveal this secret or solve the puzzle that perhaps was never even explicitly presented. I constantly touch the things my parents left behind and look at them as if they were codes that I want to decipher. For me, the decoding process is reminiscent of the creative act: I never know whether I have reached my goal. I don’t know what happens to art that reaches its goal,“ explains the artist.
The exhibition is available for viewing until April 4th.
Aurelija Maknytė is an active participant in contemporary art exhibitions and projects in Lithuania and abroad. The artist’s most frequently explored subjects are archiving, memory and coincidence.
