“Photo Salon In Sodu Str.”
Benigna Kasparavičiūtė & Kęstutis Šapoka
Everything started in around 2004 when friends used to show those never ending travel photos to Benigna Kasparavičiūtė and Kęstutis Šapoka, so they decided to act accordingly. As the artists could not afford to go on holidays to other countries then, they started to take photos of their trips to micro districts of their native Vilnius. They have photographed each other next to the most ‘memorable’ objects of Šeškinė, Karoliniškės and Justiniškės districts by using amateur cameras. Later on they just started to take photos of their environment and all kinds of boring mundane objects like cheap paintings, given as presents by relatives placed in horrible interiors, run down communal staircases, daily garbage truck, even the Song Festival shown on TV. The artists have now accumulated several thousands of these uninteresting photos and, as the acquaintances began to avoid them, they are surely willing to share all this good with the visitors of the exhibition.
Benigna Kasparavičiūtė and Kęstutis Šapoka are creating photographs, videos, collages, conceptual art, texts, paintings since 2002. Sometimes they work as a duo on continuous projects, and sometimes they work individually.
