The newest exhibition by Evelīna Deičmane has been created in Jūrkalne.  Through discussions and shared everyday life, the artist has become accustomed to local traditions, as well as collecting songs and stories.

„…That’s what I do, that’s what my mother did, that’s what my mother’s mother did. I don’t know why,” that’s how old traditions in singing, baking bread, wicker basket weaving, life in Jūrkalne are mostly explained. In the week I was visiting, I tried to get to know and practise these traditions.  As a result my bread turned out round like a rock from the sea, song roars like a wave and the language is as sharp as the wind. The knowledge I gather comes from citizens of Jūrkalne of different age groups –  Marija Rudzāja (90 years old), Katrīna (9 years old), bread bakers  Juris and Inga Lastovski,  hammersmith Ainārs Rullis,’’ tells the artist.

Evelīna Deičmane has continuously been interested in traditions, tales, nature’s and human’s place in the universal sequence of time and space (solo shows „Burt-Nieks” (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, 2011; Burtnieki Culture Center, 2012), „Laika dalīšana” („Time Division”) (Contemporary Art Center kim?, 2012), „Lidijas dārzs” („Lidy’s Garden”) (The garden of Rīga Dom Church, 2013)). In the artist’s works of art, traditions and everyday life becomes mythologised and connected with personal emotional experiences. Evelīna Deičmane often experiments with sound and visual elements. A minimalistic approach in using visual means of expression is characteristic of her. In the exhibition silent and sounding objects will be seen alike.

Evelīna Deičmane has graduated Art Academy of Latvia, department of Visual Communication (2007) and studied at Berlin University of the Arts UDK Experimental Media and Visual Communication departments.
Since 1999, the artist has taken part in remarkable international exhibitions – The 15th Biennale of Sidney (Australia, 2006), The 2nd Moscow Biennale (Russia, 2007), „Manifesta 7” (Italy, 2008), The 12th International Cairo Biennale (Egypt, 2010), etc. In 2009, Evelīna Deičmane alongside Miks Matrēvics represented Latvia in The 53rd Venice Biennale.
