On Thursday, 15 March at 5.30 p.m. Kadri Toom’s personal exhibition “Screen Dream” will be opened in the small gallery of the Tartu Art House.

Toom focuses on the surface and its deceptive and ever-changing space. The present works are inspired by the screens: their intense colours, high resolution wallpapers depicting landscapes, reflections, undulating lights and the structures that appear above and underneath their surfaces.

Toom explains: “Presence of the screen reality is becoming more important and believable than the presence of the physical space. Reality is surrounded by semblance in the form of ever-changing fragments full of information. The mediated, filtered and fragmentary images lead to rhizome-like narratives. Our present flashes by in a haze of pixels. Surface structures have been suspended and are replaced with astonishment and absence. Floating through this asymmetric pattern is reminiscent of a dream where images transform in a random rhythm and everything is possible.”

Kadri Toom (b 1984) has graduated from the Painting Department of the Tartu Art College and has a master’s degree in printmaking from the Estonian Academy of Arts. Since 2008, she has been teaching various subjects at her former alma mater in Tartu. Although Toom’s first personal exhibitions took place in Tartu, her last individual project was five years ago in Y Gallery. The first version of the present exhibition took place in Hobusepea Gallery in Tallinn in the end of 2017.
