From December 5, 2013 to January 11, 2014 Mūkusala Art Salon’s Upper Gallery (Mūkusalas st. 42, Riga) the presents “Order of the Day”, an exhibition of latest works by Paulis Liepa. The artist continues from previous exhibitions his Project “Life”, representing everyday objects as micromodels of the surrounding world.

“The laboratory of the Project “Life” has at last acquired an internet connection and cable television, and, as a consequence, completely subjective bits of life start to mingle with heaps of fragments of everyday information from the outside world.” (Paulis Liepa)

In his prints, calling it “Project “Life””, Paulis Liepa depicts the commonplace – living spaces, objects, food, everyday trifles and their packaging. In his latest works, expanding the horizon of things in focus, references to the global, to social networks and to modern technologies are included. The commonly known acquires an otherness through the imitation of design aesthetics or the artist’s ability to precisely capture the unmistakable graphic impression of the depicted object. Paulis plays with the visuality of the distinct packaging of goods, pointers, informative signs, plans and technical drawings, turning his works into almost archetypal symbols, easily readable for the contemporary consumer. Nevertheless, this outward simplicity of Paulis’ works belies meticulous and lengthy process, through which they not only acquire layers of paint as traces, but the represented objects themselves are turned into charged models of the surrounding world. The global, cosmological subjects in Paulis’ works are interpreted via the quotidian as peculiar objects for contemplation, finding eternity in the frozen clock dial or the ‘back’ button on a computer screen.

Paulis Liepa (1978) works in printmaking, using collagraph and cardboard cut. He has held 8 solo exhibitions. He received the 2012 Diena Annual Award for Culture for his exhibition “Sill Life” at the Mūkusala Art Salon. He has been nominated for the Purvītis Prize. A catalogue of his works “Paulis Liepa. Project “Life”” was published by the Mūkusala Art Salon in 2012.
