Opening of the first exhibition cycle of 2019 of the Kim? Contemporary Art Centre

The exhibition round of 2019 of Kim? Contemporary Art Centre is kicked off with three exhibitions – solo shows of the two young artists, one is Amanda Ziemele, a painter seeking for new pictorial forms and ways to tell it, next comes the artist Santa France, who addresses new media art and technology application in arts and studies the related aesthetics thereof, and the programme is rounded up with a many-voiced exhibition project on the [re]construction of history and stories, curated by Laura Brokāne, the winner of Kim? Open Call 2019 (among participants one will also find the artist Viktorija Eksta and poets Artis Ostups, Kārlis Vērdiņš, Aivars Madris, Einārs Pelšs and Raimonds Ķirķis).

Amanda Ziemele “Quantum Hair Implants”, 2019

Solo Show by Amanda Ziemele: Quantum Hair Implants

In her works, Amanda Ziemele represents ideas which are the result of in-depth analysis. Understanding and processing/incorporating the various reference materials and sources discovered into her works is another typical sign of hers; it becomes evident by integration of pictorial and other objects into the painting plane. Amanda Ziemele on the coming exhibition: “Space swallows you upon entering. Mouth shut, when searching for words, tongue in the wrong place.” For Ziemele, the process of creation and working on exhibitions is like an open structure, nearly unlimited in its vast opportunities. Analysis of and preparation for the exhibition at Kim? is related to several thematic focusses, such as “work in process and uncertainty”. Another focus addresses dimensions like inside, outside and interspace. Further, the third focus is related to colour pigments and “cosmic dust” – they are some sort of remains of a galactic big bang, ready to take over the exhibition and its space.

Amanda Ziemele (1990) resides and works in Riga. The process of creation is seen as an open field. Amanda is interested in formal features of painting and the closely-related territory of ideas and context. In 2018, she graduated from the Diploma studies in the Interdisciplinary and experimental painting study programme at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Her Diploma project was awarded the Freundeskreis der HfBK Diplompreis prize and was nominated for European art graduates Startpoint18 Prize. In 2015, she gained BA in Arts from the Painting Department, Art Academy of Latvia.

Santa France “Safeporting”, 2019

Santa France “Safeporting”

Solo show “Safeporting” by Santa France will be based on animated compositions, designed with 3D animation, using screens, metal structures and wires. “Safeporting” is a medical term to describe a process when a medical practitioner performs procedure while telling the patient about what is happening and what is being done to his body, so the patient would feel safe and undisturbed. But the term can also be transferred to others, more everyday communication situations. Another meaning of the term derives from the computer science – the transfer of software from one system or device to another. In terms of language and initial associations, “safeporting” is a fitting name combining both the intimate and personal with a rational and pragmatic approach to technologies, characteristic of artistic creation.

At the end of last year, Santa France was spotted internationally with her 3D model “Assembly Line” being printed on the German design magazine Form cover; the particular edition was devoted to the topic – Work (Arbeit). It also published an interview with Sunta Frunce and a few other illustrations. To create, Santa France uses Blender, the professional version of the free open source 3D computer graphics software, which she mastered by watching online videos.

From glittering interiors to chilling still lives, the real-life and web works of hers often tend to ask questions and seek answers of how it feels to be alone – to work in solitude, be self-sufficient, how to compensate for the lack of human contact by surfing on the internet and “consuming” inner resources, which leads to topics such as intimacy and personal issues being covered by the work she creates.

Santa France (1993) is a young multimedia artist, graduated from the media arts programme at Liepāja University (2015). Her artistic career path is predominantly related to 3D software and its application for the creation of webcollages, videos, animated GIFs and digital illustrations. Underlying inspiration comes from the internet culture – self-reflection, nostalgia and loneliness and the learning, creation and posting of own works online.

Kim? Open Call 2019, Poetry and works by Eugen Berg, 2019

Winner of Kim? Open Call 2019 is a project curated by Laura Brokāne – “Poetry and works by Eugen Berg”

n July 2018, Kim? announced the annual Open Kim? Call 2019. Instead of focussing on artists like it was done for the last few years, this time the call for tenders was aimed at curators. Thinking of the ever-expanding ecosystem of arts and the ever-changing socio-political circumstances in Latvia and abroad, Open Kim? Call 2019 invited curators to reconsider/redesign exhibitions as a media tool, which can be used to expand, articulate, set on fire, promote and identify occurrences, which deserve to be brought to life in the form of a tangible collective experience.

The “Poetry and works by Eugen Berg” curated by Laura Brokāne, editor or the online literature and philosophy magazine Punctum, will be an exhibition of the only Latvian avant-garde poet of the interwar period. The exhibition will serve as a contemporary arts version of the poet’s memorial room and is the result of interdisciplinary cooperation between the artist Viktorija Eksta and the poets Artis Ostups, Kārlis Vērdiņš, Aivars Madris, Einārs Pelšs and Raimonds Ķirķis.

Authors of the exhibition “Poetry and works by Eugen Berg” will use contemporary arts language to interpret the term memorial apartment by means of exhibition-typical elements – furniture, handwritten notes of poems, correspondence letters, memorial items, photos, printed materials, voice recordings and videos, artworks. The character, a Latvian avant-garde poet, is meant to represent an alternative version of the process in Latvian literature history and highlight its hidden gems. The exhibitions aims to promote interdisciplinary projects with a focus on the merging and mixing of literature and contemporary art to create innovations.
