Open call: Photobook Masterclass with Rafał Milach and Ania Nałęcka

Kaunas Photography Gallery and Parallel – European Photo based Platform are glad to announce an open call for Photobook Masterclass with Rafał Milach and Ania Nałęcka, which will take place on September 14-19 in Kaunas Photography Gallery. The participants are expected to bring a completed project, who seek to find a meaningful book format for their work. The number of participants is limited, workshop is free of charge.

The process of the masterclass will combine both conceptual and practical sides of making a photobook dummy, it will guide from editing and sequencing to the making of a photobook dummy. During collective and individual sessions the mentors will bring different perspectives of both photographer and book designer and will guide through the main steps in making photobooks.

Rafał Milach (b. 1978 ­in Gliwice, Poland) – visual artist, photographer, educator and author of photo books. His work focuses on topics related to the transformation in the former Eastern Bloc. Professor at the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice, Poland and at the ITF Institute of Creative Photography of the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic. His award-winning photo books include The Winners7 Rooms and The First March of Gentlemen. Rafał Milach has received scholarships from the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage and European Cultural Foundation. He was the finalist of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize and won the World Press Photo award. Milach is a co-founder of the Sputnik Photos collective. His works have been widely exhibited worldwide, and can be found in the collections of the MoMA Warsaw, CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, the ING Polish Art Foundation, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan), and Brandts Museum in Odense (Denmark). Rafal Milach is the associate member of Magnum Photos.

Ania Nałęcka  (b. 1977 ­in Gliwice, Poland), graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Faculty of Printmaking and Graphic Design in 2002, is a book designer (alias Tapir Book Design). She has designed many critically acclaimed photobooks, that have been awarded many of the most prestigious prizes such Paris Photo / Aperture Foundation Photobook Award Nominee (USA/France 2012, 2013 2014, 2016 and 2019) and POYi The Best Photography Book Award (first prize, USA 2012, 2014). She also gives talks and offer workshops on photo book design. In collaboration with her husband and photographer Rafał Milach she has co-curated international exhibitions in places such as FOAM Museum, (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). PHOTOEspaña (Madrid, Spain), Photomonth in Kraków (Poland) and SÅM Lessinia (Italy).
