Aistis KavaliauskasOn 1st of September at 6 PM we invite you to visit Aistis Kavaliauskas exhibition “The Observer” at GRAFO gallery at Trakų st. 14, Vilnius. Curator of the exhibition -Aistė Marija Grajauskaitė.

Aistis Kavaliauskas (1991) is a representative artist of the young generation who creates visual arts in various forms. Usually working with spatial objects and collages, currently he works with conceptual graphics, contemporary sculpture, painting and installations. During studies the character of city in artist works has developed itself and till today is important for narratives of art. In artworks artist explores the urban character through constantly changing structures of social and physical levels. Various situations ongoing in the city which have different variety of visual expressions, are the main factors that interests the artist.

Aistis Kavaliauskas art at the first sight looks simple, as if it articulates nothing or doesn‘t articulate anything. In the canvas of „Theatre of Shadows“ the viewer sees paradox of simplicity which opens opportunity for deeper dialogue. By using „Theatre of Shadows“ as a metaphor and the paradox of unveiling and hiding shadows give us the opportunity to experience and see aesthetics of real and surreal worlds. As Aistis Kavaliauskas says – „the harmony between shadows of theatrical illustrations and urbanistic aesthetics of walls creates new perception of the view, which invites to interpret the visible view while seeing just the fragment“.

The observer of Aistis Kavaliauskas art works can find himself in unlimited time and space. This feeling is caused by modern, XXI century and street art forms, symbols and stories which are not only impacting artist by itself but also are still questionable in art world because of its’ historical narratives (constant questions if street art is real art or more like social action). The viewer is led to feel as if one is in constantly changing and dynamic space.

In first solo exhibition titled “Stebėtojas | The Observer” Aistis Kavaliauskas contrasts intimate (home space) and public (street) spaces interests and combines contemporary painting tradition which talks about sociality and art space synthesis in every step. With art works that are exposed at current exhibition artist is considering a power glance and its inner dynamics. Why sometimes we are feeling observed though we are alone in safe environment? Why some glances are making us feel relaxed and calm and some on the contrary create inner anxiety? In the woods that Aistis Kavaliauskas observes we aren’t the ones who are seeing woods but woods are watching us. Already by stepping into the space of gallery artist is greeting us with his own words and as if with it gives tune that The Observer is living charater. And only we have to choose will we be monitored or will we become observers.

The exhibition will be held until 24th of October.
