‘On Becoming Fluid’ is a series of new works installed site-specifically in Hardwick Gallery. The exhibition consists of two expanded practices intertwining between sculpture and painting.

On the opening night there will be a series of performances by Winter and Estna and invited guests. Merike will mix her signature ‘cocktails as paintings’ to be drunk and never seen again. Winter’s performance uses his sculptural apparatus to create a cacophony of noise via sheet steel, hammering, contact microphones and a sound system alongside guest and Hardwick Gallery curator Sarah Bowden.

Also joining Estna and Winter are acclaimed musicians Chris Cundy and Bobby Barry & Ian Mikyska and who will be responding to the exhibition with improvised music sets.

Funded by Arts Council Northern Ireland

Keef Winter works between sculpture, installation, sound and performance. He produces objects that reference urban dissonance and reflect on cultish practices. His work seeks to embody a state of transformation that is birthed from symbolic and physical enactments of rupture. In the destruction of a fence or hoarding, a petrol bomb to a peace wall, a brick to a riot shield, a smashed shop window in a protest, the surfaces that are the first to be struck are the elements that form Winter’s material language.

N. Irish artist Keef Winter lives and works in London. Winter studied architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art and received a PhD in Philosophy entitled ‘The Handyman Aesthetic’ from Ulster University Belfast. His recent exhibitions include: ‘Deep Inside’ (solo), Galeria Breve; Mexico City (2016); ‘Sticky Enough’ (two-person with Harry Meadows), Chalton Gallery, London (2016); ‘Salon Sebastian Monteux’, Glasgow International (2016); ‘Streetwalking’, FUSO & Carpe Diem, Lisbon (2015); ‘Center Point’ (solo), House of St. Barnabas, London (2015); ‘Let’s build our own tomb’ (performance), X-Marks the Bokship, Matt’s Gallery, London (2015); ‘Neutral’, TULCA Festival of Visual Art, Galway (2014); ‘London Dust’ (2-person with Rut Blees Luxemburg), Chandelier Projects, London (2014); ‘Stone Dreams’ ORGY PARK, New York (2014); ‘X-Operation’, Wysing Arts Centre Cambridge (2013).

Merike Estna (born in Estonia 1980) lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia. She has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in painting and from the Goldsmiths College, University of London, in 2009 with the Master’s degree in art practice.

The work of Merike Estna is largely invested in the processes of painting, as a way of approaching the artwork as an integral part of life rather than about life. In her process-based work, Estna is embedding patterns and colour combinations from the crafts and applied arts, which have not traditionally been accepted in the visual language of painting. Thus, her work is challenging the masculine territory of painting and questioning the strict visual separation between painting and craft discourses. Initially subjecting canvases to such patterns and application-based treatments, Estna gradually progressed to cover clothes, objects and entire spaces with cottonwool colours, gradually expanding her research into colour and the acts of painting, the possibilities of experiencing and looking at things.
