‘A man with dark hair and a sunset in the background’ by Paulius Petraitis at Lokomotif, Lentvaris

– Do you wish you’re human?
– No I like being the entity that I am.
– That’s must be a good feeling.
– Thanks. Next question?

“A man with dark hair and a sunset in the background” – a series by Paulius Petraitis, dating 2017–2019 – investigates the programming logic of visual recognition based on deep learning and artificial intelligence. Using personal photographs, the potential of technology to redefine the models of today’s social behaviors is surveyed. Through its light and poetic approach, the project offers to look into the embryonic state of contemporary technology. Within it, discrepancies between human and machine vision are revealed, raising the question of how an image becomes recognizable.

Paulius Petraitis is an artist, curator and theoretician based in Vilnius. In his works, he investigates the production of image meanings in a wider sociocultural and technological context. He is currently a curator of an exhibition of expanded photography in the 2020 Riga Photography Biennial, which will take place in the Latvian National Museum of Art. Paulius is also one of the members of the interdisciplinary collective “Money Haven” (presented at the CAC, Vilnius in 2018 and “I: project space”, Beijing, in 2019).
