mThe great square has no corners
…the great tone makes only a tiny sound,
the great image has no form.

Hold the great image in your hand
and the whole world comes to you.

Laozi / Francois Jullien

Maria Sidljarevitš comments on her present exhibition: „The attempt to express one’s ideas and thoughts in an understandable and accessible form is one of the most important aspects in our life. Attaching linguistic form to an idea or a thought makes the transfer complicated since every word is a concept that everybody has different associations with. I am intrigued as an artist by forwarding my ideas and thoughts with their initial content and meaning. How to relate to an object the way the viewer would perceive it as an abstract form, irrespective of his or her personal associations and not giving it either positive or negative evaluation? In my paintings I depict various objects and images as part a composition the way they also express in real life, serving as small parts of a big system. There are no such concepts as „good“ or „bad“ for the universe – every phenomenon of life is just a part of it. My purpose is to achieve the state of understanding in painting that makes it possible to become completely free from judgement.“

Maria Sidljarevitš has obtained MA degree in painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2014. The artist studied the subject of personal memory while reviving images from the past in her naivistic-expressionistic way as seen at her personal exhibition „You broke my life“ held in Tallinn City Gallery in 2014. She has participated in exhibitions since 2008, is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the chairwoman of the board of Estonian Painters’ Association.
